Agenda Surf Co has a humble beginning. Born from a love of the ocean and with 20 years of surf retail experience, we exist to create that perfect board and to share our passion with you and the next generation of surfers. Our goal is simple: to create performance boards of the highest quality, while offering customers exceptional value.
What's your agenda?
Choosing the right surfboard size:
There is so much to consider here. If you are already surfing you will have a fair idea and volume calculators like this are an excellent help. Other factors to consider are if the board is PU or EPS core. EPS cores are made with expanded polystyrene containing more air so you can therefore go about 10% smaller in volume compared to PU boards. The final factor is waves. Smaller the weaker the wave then higher the volume wider the board you want. You don't want to go buying one of Kelly Slater's old performance short boards when you are learning in 1-2 foot slop. While it will look cool if you're a grommie its about as helpful as flat tires on a race car. We are more than happy to advise on boards and can easily ask and narrow down board selection for you. Please call us on 09 4279552 and ask for Nick or Taila.
Choosing the Right SUP Size:
Choosing a Board Bag:
Usually on the bottom of your board there are dimensions written. When choosing aboard bag make sure it's equal to or bigger than the length... that's pretty straight forward right.. BUT where we see people come unstuck is the shape of the nose and the width of the board. If you have a rounder nose then you will need a fish board for it to fit nicely, or longboard bag if you have a mini mal or malibu with a round nose. Also check on the width. If your board is very short and wide we recommend that you contact us with the measurements and we are only to happy to help you select the perfect bag and if we don't have the correct one listed we can easily custom order for you. You don't want to have to return a 9ft board bag from Dunedin its going cost you a bomb!
Next point to consider is thickness. If you are going to travel with it you need a bag that is 6mm thick at the absolute minimum. Remember ding repairs are costly most min repair is $60+ so don't skimp an extra $30 when choosing a bag or it may come back to bite you when you get a $100 ding from that next trip or when your sisters boyfriend rides over it on his scooter.
Choosing a leg rope:
In general you should select a leg rope approximately the length of you board. If you board was 6'5" long and you were looking at a 6ft or 7ft leg rope then we would recommend you took the 6ft option if you are a beginner using in soft waves with people about and 7ft option if you are using in bigger waves.
If you are buying a leg rope for a sup we recommend the coiled leashed as they take a lot of impact out in the surf and in the flat water they don't drag. Again a preference would be a knee / calf leash for sup.
Leg rope come with 'comp' and regular thickness. Comp leg ropes are lighter and create less drag in the water but may break if the surf is over head height. Do not use a comp leash if you are not confident in the surf, surfing dangerous places, using a long board or SUP unless you know what you are doing.
We strongly recommend double swivel. Single swivel leg ropes tangle up and suck... spend the extra $10 if you are going to be using that leggie more than 5 times. Also if you are not a good swimmer get a high end brand brand like Dakine or FCS.
Leg ropes should be replaced. Don't wait for it to break on that perfect 4ft day when you're miles up the coast or even worst 5ft plus out west. If its old or has cuts replace it. A good habit is to buy a new one every year on your birthday / xmas think of it as the ultimate treat to yourself...sure beats swimming in near dark at Muriwai!
Choosing Fins:
Choosing the right fins can be a hard decision. So many people don't take the time to see what a good set of fins can do. A good set of fins has turned boards around for me that I hated to the best board I've ridden! Our advise is to check the brand websites, talk to us if its a board we stock or ask the shaper of your board what they recommend, but still then they may surf differently from you....instore we have demo fins and we would recommend you come but and try some. (Note to demo fins you must pay retail for them but we refund if bought back as agreed with no damage.)
Choosing a Beginners soft surfboard:
Alot depends on the waves you will be learning in but as a general rule you want to be no taller than 2/3's of the size of the board. EG 6ft board around 4ft tall. This will depend on weather you have good surf experience IE growing up bodyboarding then you go for a smaller board vs your size, like wise a complete novice who is heavier than average for their height should go the other way. Remember this if likely your first board make it bigger than smaller as the aim of the game is to stand up and enjoy your self! If you need any advice we are always just a phone call away. PLUS don't forget we offer FREE First timers lessons over summer months. MORE
Choosing a body board:
As a general rule you want to be able to put the tail into your belly button and hold you hands on the nose. But if you are just wanting to have a little fun go by this... <30kgs approx 37" <60kgs approx 40" <80kgs approx 42" 80kgs+ 44". If you are hard out and are going to use it for more than just some seaside summer fun then make sure you get one with stringers or it will break.
Choosing a wetsuit:
Wetsuits are described in thickness as a number eg 3/2mm. The first number refers to the thickness of the neoprene on the body and the second number the thickness on the arms and usually legs. The higher the numbers the warmer but the trade off it than it will be harder to paddle in.
Next thing to consider is the seams. Over locked is the cheaper option only good for summer, glued and stitched was old high end standard, it's good but if you surf alot seams will break down. Best is taped or welded seams. Fully water tight. If you get a top of the time wetsuit you can surf in a 3/2 in winter vs a 4/3 in Auckland region but everyone will be different. Again don't skimp on a wetsuit if you surf more than 3x per month. Get a decent one and it will make surfing far more enjoyable in winter.
Back zip vs chest zip. Back zips are ALOT easier to get into of you you have a shoulder injury or have big shoulders forget a chest zip. Chest zips are great for taller leaner people as they don't pull on your back and do not flush with water down you back when you duck dive. Chest zips / zip free are all the rage with alot of marketing hype but at the end of the day if you can't get out of your suit after a surf then it's no fun. If you are bigger and haven't used a chest zip before then we suggest you try one on in store so we can show you the best way for getting into it.
Fit. At wetsuit should fit SNUG. Make sure you take advantage of all the sizes offered these days like XLS = Extra Large Short. This is a very common NZ Bloke size. Make sure you check the charts below and get it right if you go by these buying online is EASY.
Here is a good basic guide. You can easily get sea temperatures from most surf reports or weather websites.
