Pyzel Score Lord

The Board That Actually Gets Ridden

Most surfers end up with a quiver full of good intentions. A performance shortboard that only comes out on the rare all-time day, and something wide and clunky for the rest of the year that's fun but never quite lets you surf properly. The board that actually gets ridden the most is the one that paddles into everything, holds when it counts, and still lets you turn like you mean it.

That's the gap the Score Lord is built for. It's Pyzel's daily driver: one board designed to cover the two-foot dribbler on a Tuesday morning and the solid six-foot day on the weekend, without asking you to compromise on how it actually surfs.

It didn't come from a spreadsheet. Pyzel spent three years building and refining versions of this shape for their own team riders and friends, watching them log wave after wave and feeding that feedback straight back into the outline, rocker and bottom contours. It only went into production because people kept paddling up asking what they were riding.

Why The "Daily Driver" Category Exists

Here's the problem most boards create for themselves: chase pure performance and you get a board that's a handful to paddle and only fun on good days. Chase easy paddling and volume, and you get something that surfs like a barge once the wave has any push in it. Most surfers spend more time missing waves or bogging rail than they do actually surfing, because the board they're on was built for one end of that trade-off, not the middle.

A genuine daily driver has to solve both problems in the same shape: enough volume and glide to catch weak, everyday NZ waves easily, but with the outline, rocker and rail shape to still drive off the bottom and hold a line when the swell picks up. Get that blend right and the same board takes you from a flat Tuesday to a proper Saturday swell.

Product Overview

The Score Lord's outline is clean, with the wide point pushed forward two inches and a full nose that's slightly wider than the tail. That extra width and area up front does the paddling and wave-catching work, while the back half stays sleek without going overly narrow, finishing in a very round pin tail that keeps the exit smooth and loose rather than skatey.

Volume is pushed forward too. Foam sits under your chest, which is what makes the board paddle and catch waves easily, while the beaked nose stays sleek. The rails and tail are thinned right out, so despite carrying real volume up front, the back of the board still feels sensitive and quick underfoot rather than stiff.

The rocker blends a lower nose into a long, continuous tail rocker. That combination lets the board plane early and carry speed through flat, weak sections, but still tuck into the pocket on steeper, curvier waves without the tail catching. Underneath, a gentle vee runs nose to tail, with double concave working through the back two-thirds. The vee-to-concave transition keeps the board feeling lively and lets it get up on top of the water, while also helping a wider board like this tip quickly from rail to rail, so pumping and changing direction doesn't take much effort. Rails are medium, and it comes stock with five fin boxes, so you can set it up as a thruster, quad or twin depending on how you want it to feel.

Real World Performance

Because sizing and volume are pushed to work in your favour, the Score Lord paddles noticeably easier than a standard performance shortboard, and that shows up most on the average NZ day, the two-to-four-foot windswell or gutless point break session where a smaller board leaves you paddling for your life. Once you're up, the thinned rails and tail keep it from feeling like a log. It'll roll into a turn at any speed off that long tail rocker, hold a line through a punchy section thanks to the concave, and release cleanly off the round pin tail rather than skating out. Pyzel rate it for anything from two to ten feet, which tracks with the design brief: enough board underneath you to make the small days worthwhile, without giving up the ability to hold in when it gets genuinely solid.

Who It's Best For

  • Surfers who want one board for most sessions instead of swapping boards depending on swell size
  • Improving surfers who want a board that helps their paddling and wave count while they build fitness and skill
  • Better surfers who want to size down closer to their own height for a more responsive, high-performance feel
  • Anyone whose paddle fitness isn't where they'd like it, since the extra volume and glide do some of the work for you
  • Surfers who want the option to fine-tune the ride with different fin setups rather than being locked into one feel

Size Guide

Pyzel sizes the Score Lord relative to your surfing level and fitness rather than height alone. Better surfers can ride it close to their own height, or a touch longer just for the fun of it. Intermediate surfers generally want to go longer than their height, sometimes six inches or more above that, to maximise paddle power, stability and glide. If your paddle fitness is still building, sizing up gives you every advantage while you progress.

8'6" 23 1/2" 3 3/8" 71.3

Not sure where you land on this chart? That's exactly the kind of thing worth asking us before you order.

How It Compares

Against a dedicated high-performance shortboard, the Score Lord trades a little outright sensitivity for a lot more paddle power, wave count and forgiveness, without losing the ability to turn hard when a wave allows it. Against a full mini-mal or longboard, it gives up glide and stability but rewards you with a far more responsive, rail-to-rail surfing experience. It sits squarely in the middle as an everyday board rather than a specialist tool for one end of the wave-quality spectrum. Within Pyzel's own range, it's positioned as the daily driver: the one board built to be ridden the most, not just on the best days.

Important Notes

  • Sizing is deliberately relative to skill and fitness rather than a fixed height match, so two surfers of the same height may want different lengths. Worth confirming with us rather than guessing off the chart alone.
  • Because it's built to flatter paddling and glide, an advanced surfer chasing the absolute sharpest, most sensitive feel for all-time performance conditions may still prefer a dedicated high-performance shortboard as a second board.
  • It comes stock with five fin boxes and no fins included as standard. Final feel changes noticeably depending on whether it's set up as a thruster, quad or twin, so it's worth talking through fin choice rather than guessing.

Why Buy From Underground

We've been fitting Kiwi surfers to the right board out of Orewa Beach since 1997. A board like the Score Lord lives or dies on getting the length and volume right for the surfer riding it, not just picking a size off a chart, and that's the kind of call we make every day. If you're weighing this up against another model, or want a second opinion on sizing before you commit, we're happy to talk it through.

Talk To Us

Not sure whether to size up for paddle power or size down for performance? Want to talk through fin setups, or how the Score Lord compares to something else on your shortlist? Get in touch and we'll help you land on the right call before you order.

IMPORTANT NOTE RE OUR STOCK LISTING ONLINE:

INSTOCK = This is At our store in Orewa Auckland and ready to ship or pick up the same day.  If driving from a while away, always call ahead to confirm.  Ph +649427552

IN WAREHOUSE = This is loaded, so you can do a custom order.  But there are hundreds of boards available EX Aussie from the Pyzel warehouse, so if you are looking at a common new model, it's likely that we can order ex-stock for you.  It will be stock glassing, fins lay up and tail.  If that happens, you have two options.  Add it to our next Sea Freight order at no extra charge that could take anywhere from 3-8 weeks, depending on when you order and the shipping cycle, or we can express airship it at $75 extra, which takes around ten working days.  If you have any questions regarding this, please contact our store.

THE CUSTOM PROCESS:  A&Q

Ordering a custom board is by far the best way to get a new board.  It may take a little longer, but it comes around pretty quickly, and the end result is a board precisely as you wanted it.

PAYMENT:

When ordering a custom, we will take a $200 deposit and finalise the price, all dims, fins and glassing with you.  Once the order is placed, we cannot cancel or change or refund the deposit.  Upon arriving in NZ, the final balance is payable.  This must be paid within 14 days, or the board will be onsold and the deposit lost.  If for any reason, the board is not made as per your confirmation, we will refund or remake it without question, but this is very rare.  If you are ordering online and do not want to pay all at once, please either pay using direct deposit and only make the $200 deposit or Call Nick 0212891660 nick@undergroundsurf.co.nz and we can manually invoice you.  ALL Pyzel orders done online will be followed up by a Phone call to confirm everything and discuss glassing, fins and dims.

CUSTOM DIMS / GLASSING / FINS / SPRAYS:

Custom Dim's and Glassing are at no extra charge unless you use a special glassing option on a gun etc.  Standard on most boards is 4/4/4 Glassing, but 4/6/4 is VERY popular for people ordering boards over 80kgs.  The weight difference is marginal for an everyday surfer, and they last significantly better on the deck.  The 6oz is a patch over the deck with 4oz base and 4oz top lapping the rails with 8oz of glass.  Changing fin layup is also popular.  If you are never going to surf that board as a Quad, then you can remove the quad rear fins that come with many boards like the phantom & ghost.  Removing fins dramatically reduces weight and drag.  We can work with you and create a custom shape to match your required volume.  This is popular again at no extra cost and managed by Pyzels Head Shaper.  Creating a full custom adds 2-3 weeks to get it all done, but for advanced surfers well worth it.  Sprays and colours are available but start at around $150.  The best way to choose a spray or graphic is to google image

KEY POINTS:

All Pyzel Surfboards are custom-made in Australia using the highest quality blanks and materials.  Shipping is hard and now, post covid so plan ahead. If you know you have a boat trip next winter, then order now.  We can always push the delivery out.  It's far better to get your new board and surf it a bunch before taking it away.  Custom boards will be brand new, fresh white, and have your name 'Shaped for XXX' on the bottom in most cases.  That alone is a great feeling when owning a board.

Pyzel Surfboards started in a backyard shaping room on the North Shore of Oahu around 1995 or so, and has evolved to become one of the leading surfboard companies in the world. Jon Pyzel grew up in Santa Barbara, California, started surfing in high school and quickly found his passion. Matt Moore started shaping his boards and put him on his team. Matt always helped explain the ideas and principles of surfboard design and let Jon watch him shape all his boards. After travelling for surf, Jon realized he wanted bigger waves, warmer water and made a permanent move to Oahu’s North Shore in 1992. He found work fixing dings at Country Surfboards, and quickly learned the ins and outs of the art, working as a hot coater. He soon connected with Jeff Bushman, who gave him guidance, input, and encouragement. Eventually, Jeff gave Jon a job as his back-shaper and that was the beginning of his shaping career.

All Pyzel Surfboards that come into New Zealand are made in Pyzels Gold Coast Factory.
