Haydenshapes Darknoiz SITD Edition Surfboard, Futures 3 Fin Boxes

Limited edition: be quick. These cannot be repeated.

Haydenshapes DarkNoiz — Stab In The Dark 2026 Winner

Built To Win, Not Just To Look Fast

Every year a handful of shapers hand their best work to some of the most technical surfers on earth and let the waves decide which board is actually the best. There's no marketing spin in that result. Just a board that got ridden harder, faster and with more control than everything else on the beach that day.

In 2026, that board was the DarkNoiz. Ethan Ewing rode it to the win at Stab In The Dark, and it's now Haydenshapes' most refined, most performance-focused round tail to date. If you're chasing a shortboard that holds a line through real power without giving up drive, this is the one that just proved it can.

We've only got a small number of these coming into Underground Surf, so if you want one, don't sit on it.

Why A Round Tail Performance Shortboard Exists

Squash tails are forgiving and quick off the bottom, but they can skate and lose grip the moment a wave gets steep, fast or hollow. A round tail solves that by holding a longer, cleaner rail line through the turn instead of releasing early. The trade-off is that a poorly tuned round tail can feel sluggish. Get the rocker, rail and bottom contour right, and you get the best of both: hold and drive when the wave is firing, without sacrificing the speed and flow a performance shortboard is built for.

Product Overview

The DarkNoiz's round tail keeps you connected through longer arcs, holding your line in powerful conditions so you can draw clean, committed turns without losing speed through critical sections. It's built around a rockerline developed over years of refinement, with the lowest point sitting slightly behind centre. That positioning carries speed through your stance while still allowing tight transitions and a quick release off the tail when you want it.

The rails are finely balanced to feel smooth and controlled without dulling response, holding confidently through high-speed turns but staying loose enough to push vertically when a section allows it. Underneath, a rolled vee entry flows into a single concave under the front foot, blends into double concave through the fins, and finishes with a slight vee-double out the tail. That progression is what delivers fast acceleration, clean rail engagement and seamless transitions from one turn into the next.

It's built in Haydenshapes' PU Polytech construction: a traditional PU core with a high-spec E-glass layup and premium polyester resin. That combination gives the board a lively, responsive flex with fast rebound, so it feels like a classic PU board underfoot, just faster, more reactive and more connected through your turns, with the added durability of a modern layup.

Real World Performance

This is a board built for when the waves turn on, not for mushy beach days. Across beach breaks, points and reefs from 3 to 12ft, the DarkNoiz rewards a surfer who's driving off the bottom and looking to hold a rail through a proper turn rather than just cruising down the line. The round tail and tuned rockerline mean it won't feel loose or forgiving on flat, weak sections the way a wider, softer board might, but the moment there's some push in the wave, it holds, drives and releases exactly where you ask it to.

Who It's Best For

  • Intermediate to advanced surfers who already have a solid bottom turn and want more control at speed
  • Surfers chasing a dedicated round tail for powerful beach, point and reef breaks
  • Anyone wanting the same shape ridden on tour, built around Ethan Ewing's fast, powerful style
  • Surfers who already have an everyday board and want a sharper, more specialised second board for when the waves get good

Ridden By The Best

The DarkNoiz is shaped on the same performance curve ridden by Haydenshapes' own team, including the exact board Ethan Ewing rode to the Stab In The Dark 2026 win (180cm, 86kg — 6'1 x 19 1/8 x 2 5/8, 31.4L), along with riders like Taj Burrow, Craig Anderson, Tanner Gudauskas, Dion Agius, Balaram Stack and Micky Clarke on their own dialled-in dimensions. It's a genuine indicator of how the shape scales across different heights, weights and styles, from Dion Agius at 168cm through to Tanner Gudauskas at 183cm.

Size Guide

This is a tighter, more performance-oriented size run than an everyday all-rounder, so it pays to get your volume right before you order, especially with limited stock on this one.

How It Compares

Against a squash tail performance shortboard, the DarkNoiz trades a little bit of quick, loose release for a longer, more connected hold through the turn, which shows up most in powerful or hollow waves rather than small, weak ones. Against a wider daily-driver style round tail, it's a noticeably more specialised, higher-performance tool, built for surfers who already have the speed and control to use it, not for building paddle power or wave count. It's the board for when conditions are good and you want to surf at your highest level, not the board for every session of the year.

Important Notes

  • This is a very limited release. We've only secured a small number of these into Underground Surf, so availability by size won't last.
  • As a performance-focused round tail, it's less forgiving in small, weak surf than a wider daily-driver shape. It's built to shine in 3ft-plus conditions with some power in the wave.
  • Volume is on the tighter, more performance-tuned side of the scale for each length, so if you're between sizes or unsure how it'll compare to a board you already ride, it's worth asking us before you order.

Why Buy From Underground

We've been helping Kiwi surfers find the right board out of Orewa Beach since 1997, and a board like the DarkNoiz is exactly the kind of release worth getting proper advice on before you buy, given how tight the volume window is per size and how limited the stock is. If you're weighing this up against your current board or another model, talk to us first.
