Tow Foil Lesson

Beginner to Expert

Tow foiling is one of the best ways to learn proper foil control because it removes the wing from the equation.

For complete beginners, it allows us to concentrate on stance, balance, height control and steering before adding another skill.

For experienced riders, tow sessions are brilliant for working on pumping, carving, smaller boards, higher-performance foils and advanced foil control.

We strongly recommend learning basic foil control before trying to learn everything about wing foiling at once.

Private Tack or Gybe Coaching

Already foiling but sick of falling off every time you try to turn?

This session focuses specifically on improving your tacks or gybes.

We can break down what you’re doing, identify where the manoeuvre is going wrong and work through the technique with you.

Ideal for intermediate wing foilers who can comfortably get onto foil but are struggling to consistently link transitions.

A private equipment consultation with Underground owner Nick Humphreys.

This is designed for riders considering a new Armstrong setup, changing their existing equipment or trying to work out exactly what combination of board, foil, mast and other equipment will suit their riding.

Rather than buying based on internet reviews or guessing at sizes, we can look at:

Why Learn to Foil Before Buying All the Gear?

One of the most common things we hear is:

Foiling equipment is incredibly sensitive to rider weight, skill level and what type of foiling you actually want to do.

A great surf foil setup isn’t necessarily a great beginner wing setup. A board that will be perfect for you in six months might be horrible to learn on today.

That’s why we recommend getting some coaching before spending thousands of dollars on equipment.

We can start you on a large, stable board and progressively move you onto smaller equipment as your confidence and foil control improve.

This lets you learn faster while also discovering what equipment actually suits you.

It can save you a lot of frustration and potentially thousands of dollars in buying the wrong gear.

The Underground Learning System

For a complete beginner, your progression might look something like this:

Session 1: Learn to Fly

Forget about the wing initially.

We’ll get you comfortable on a large, stable setup and teach you how to control the foil.

You’ll learn stance, balance, steering, takeoff and most importantly, how to control your height above the water.

Session 2: Build Control

Now we start refining your technique.

As your confidence improves, we can reduce board and foil size and begin moving you towards equipment more representative of what you’ll eventually own.

If your goal is wing foiling, we’ll begin combining your foil skills with wing control.

If you’re interested in tow, wake or surf foiling, we’ll begin working towards smaller boards, water starts and pumping.

Session 3: Put It Together

Now we’re building independence.

For wing riders, that might mean riding in stronger wind with close coaching and safety support.

For tow, wake and surf riders, we’ll work on pumping, glide, carving and riding without relying on the tow.

From there, the progression becomes completely individual.

Lesson Credit When You Buy Gear

We want you to learn on the right equipment before you buy it.

Selected lessons and consultations can therefore be credited back against qualifying equipment purchases from Underground Surf & Foil.

Different lesson types have different credit conditions, including minimum purchase amounts and time limits.

Check the individual lesson description when booking for the applicable credit offer.

This is especially useful because your ideal equipment can change dramatically after just a few quality coaching sessions.

Instead of buying a huge beginner setup and immediately wanting to replace it, we can help you learn on our equipment and then choose gear that’s better suited to where you’re heading.

About Underground Skate & Surf:

With 2022 seeing US celebrating its 25th year in the industry, you can be sure to get the best advice from a team of experts who have shredded it all and built a deep knowledge base in the process.

Underground was started in 1997 by Nick Humphreys from a car boot.

After studying Marketing for 18 months he flagged his tertiary studies. Sick of doing assignments on bogus companies, he drew down his student loan money buying skate gear and printing tees. "I started with $3000, a wad of stickers, flyers, 10 tees friends had designed, 15 decks my brother and I imported from the USA and my homework desk".

Since then, Underground Skate has become US, specialising in Surf, Skate and Fashion.

Underground has always been about ‘our community’, hence the name US.  It represents us, the ‘jackass’ generation of young people who like to have fun, push the rules and enjoy our lives.

‘If you know what US stands for, then you are a part of US’.

Underground has stayed true to its roots since its inception with a consistent, and solid Skate range available at all times.

Being situated right next to the water in Orewa beach, just North of Auckland, it was inevitable for Underground to move into water sports and bring both Surf, SUP and Foil into the fold in recent years. Since then Underground has continued to be owned and operated by a tight knit crew of passionate surfers and skaters who all share a true love for standing sideways.
