GNARALOO FLOUNDER POUNDER SOFT TOP SURFBOARD, WHITE
INCLUDES FINS. EXCLUDES LEASH AND BOARD BAG.
We recommend surfboard wax with all surfboards, including soft tops. A soft deck is not a grippy deck once it is wet. Wax it lightly before each session.
Not everyone learning to surf is a 90kg adult. If you are lighter, or buying for a teenager, a full size learner board is a lot of foam to push around. The Flounder Pounder is the Beach Cruiser's shape scaled down to suit.
5 REASONS WHY YOU NEED THIS BOARD
- 45 to 59 litres in a shorter outline, so a lighter rider gets proper float without wrestling a board that is too big for them.
- Thick soft polyethylene deck and an HDPE slick bottom, which is the same safe, durable build GSI put in their full size learner boards.
- An EPS core with an internal stringer system keeps the rocker true, so it paddles and planes rather than folding under you.
- FCS compatible fin boxes mean you can start on the soft Fino fins supplied and move to stiffer fins as you improve, without buying another board.
- Vacuum construction with no hard edges and high-density reinforcement around the leash plug, which is the bit that usually fails first.
SIZES AND VOLUMES
- 5'6" x 21" x 3", 45 litres (GSI rated rider 55kg or less)
- 6'0" x 21 5/8" x 3 1/8", 52 litres (GSI rated rider 65kg or less)
- 6'6" x 22 3/8" x 3 1/8", 59 litres (GSI rated rider 75kg or less)

HOW TO WORK OUT THE VOLUME YOU NEED
Go on volume against body weight, not height. Volume is what catches waves.
At a small, sheltered beach in waves under about 80cm, the starting point for a beginner is around 1 litre of volume per kilo of body weight. Push that up to around 1.5 litres per kilo if you are a complete beginner, not especially sporty, or still working on paddle fitness.
GSI footnote that their weight ranges assume intermediate skill, so if you are a genuine first-timer read the table a size up. At 1 litre per kilo the 6'6" suits a rider around 59kg. At the 1.5 litres per kilo a complete beginner really wants, it suits about 39kg.
If you are a heavier adult beginner, the Beach Cruiser is the right board, not this one. The Flounder Pounder is for lighter riders and teenagers.
Treat that as a starting point. Fitness, coordination and how often you actually get in the water all change the answer, and so does where you surf. Wave size, shape and power make a real difference to the board someone needs, and a board that is perfect at a gutless summer beach break can be the wrong board somewhere with more push.
We are always happy to talk it through and confirm the size before you buy. Tell us your height, weight, how much surfing you have done and where you surf, and we will tell you which one we would put you on.
WHO IT'S BEST FOR
- Lighter adults and teenagers learning to surf
- Riders under about 75kg who find a 9ft board unmanageable
- Smaller surfers wanting a soft top they can actually turn
- Anyone after a shorter, more playful foamie

WHY A SHORTER SOFT TOP
Volume is what catches waves, but length is what you have to carry, turn and duck under whitewater. A board sized for a 90kg adult is dead weight for a 55kg rider, and it will not turn for them either.
A shorter soft top with the right volume for the rider gives you the wave count without the wrestling match. That is the whole idea here.
ABOUT THE GNARALOO FLOUNDER POUNDER
Softshell construction, the same as the Beach Cruiser. Thick soft polyethylene deck, HDPE slick bottom, EPS core with an internal stringer system, and vacuum bonding that eliminates hard and sharp surfaces. High-density reinforcement is built in around the leash plug.
Flat bottom, full rail, rated by GSI for 0 to 3ft and for complete beginners through to beginners getting to their feet consistently. The supplied Fino fin set is deliberately soft, and the FCS compatible boxes let you firm it up later.
HOW IT COMPARES
This is the Beach Cruiser's smaller sibling. Same construction, same philosophy, shorter outline and less volume. Choose the Beach Cruiser if you are a heavier adult, the Flounder Pounder if you are lighter, and the Dune Buggy if you are buying for a child under about 40kg.
IMPORTANT NOTES
- It is not a heavy adult's board. The biggest size is 59 litres. If you are over about 75kg and new to surfing, buy the Beach Cruiser.
- Small wave board. GSI rate it 0 to 3ft.
- GSI's own figures disagree slightly. Their spec table and their size selector give different weight limits. We have used the spec table. Ask us if you are on the line.
- You will need a leash. Leash plug fitted, no leash included, no board bag.

WHY BUY FROM UNDERGROUND
We have been selling surfboards and soft tops from Orewa Beach, Auckland since 1997. Nearly 30 years on the same stretch of coast, and most of us learnt to surf on it.
This is a new arrival, so it has no product reviews of its own yet. What we can show you is what customers say about getting the right gear out of us. We hold 4.9 stars from 247 Google reviews.
"Sometimes in life somebody goes so far beyond what you expected in terms of customer service that, if you weren't a Kiwi, you might even give them a tip!" Patrick Fallon, Google review
"Nick and his team always have a world of knowledge. Always good advice whether you're just starting or have seen many seasons in the water/skatepark." Matt Cockayne, Google review
We stock the Softech range because it holds up in a New Zealand summer, and we will tell you honestly if a different board suits you better. Come and see them at 306 Hibiscus Coast Highway, Orewa.
