HAYDENSHAPES HYPTO KRYPTO SOFTBOARD, INVERTED
FINS NOT INCLUDED. EXCLUDES LEASH AND BOARD BAG.
We recommend surfboard wax with all surfboards, including soft tops. A soft deck is not a grippy deck once it is wet. Wax it lightly before each session.
Most soft tops are built to get beginners standing up and are dull the moment you can. The Hypto Krypto Softboard is the opposite problem: it is a genuine performance shape that happens to have a soft deck, and it will embarrass a lot of hard boards on a small day.
5 REASONS WHY YOU NEED THIS BOARD
- It is the actual Hypto Krypto outline with rails shaped off the original, not a soft top loosely styled to look like one.
- A carbon T-stringer runs the length of the board, so it stays stiff and drives off the tail where a normal foamie flexes and washes out.
- A thermoformed ASA bottom skin is UV and heat resistant, which is what stops a soft top going soft and delaminating after a summer in the car.
- A 3mm closed cell foam deck with textured traction means you can surf it without wax and without a tail pad, straight off the rack.
- Futures 3 fin boxes take proper performance fins, so this board goes as hard as the fins you put in it.
SIZES AND VOLUMES
- 6'0" x 20 1/2" x 3", 41.67 litres
- 6'4" x 21" x 3", 45.16 litres
- 6'8" x 21 1/2" x 3 1/4", 52.73 litres

HOW TO WORK OUT THE VOLUME YOU NEED
Read this before you buy. This is not a learner board.
A soft deck usually signals a beginner board. This one does not. At 41.67 to 52.73 litres it carries roughly what a performance shortboard carries, and Haydenshapes' own volume calculator puts an 80kg intermediate on about 28 litres.
Our rule of thumb is around 1 litre of volume per kilo of body weight for someone who can already surf, and about 1.5 litres per kilo for a genuine beginner. On that basis an 80kg beginner wants 80 to 120 litres. Nothing in this range comes close, so if you are learning, look at a Gnaraloo Beach Cruiser or a Softech Coaster instead and come back to this board later.
If you already surf, read it the way you would read any shortboard. The 6'0" at 41.67 litres suits a lighter or more experienced rider, the 6'8" at 52.73 litres gives you more paddle and more float on small days.
Treat that as a starting point. Fitness, coordination and how often you actually get in the water all change the answer, and so does where you surf. Wave size, shape and power make a real difference to the board someone needs, and a board that is perfect at a gutless summer beach break can be the wrong board somewhere with more push.
We are always happy to confirm the size before you buy. Tell us your height, weight, how often you surf and where, and we will tell you which one we would put you on.
WHO IT'S BEST FOR
- Competent surfers who want a board they can throw in the car and not worry about
- Anyone surfing crowded beach breaks where hitting someone is a real risk
- Travellers who need one durable board that still performs
- Experienced surfers after a small wave board with proper drive
- Parents who want to surf the same board their kids can safely borrow

WHY A PERFORMANCE SOFT TOP
The usual trade with a soft top is that you buy safety and durability and give up performance. For a learner that is a good trade. For someone who can already surf it has always been a bad one, which is why most decent surfers will not touch a foamie.
This board exists to remove that trade. You get the outline and rails of one of the most ridden shortboards of the last twenty years, with a deck that will not split your eyebrow open and a bottom skin that survives being left in a hot car.
ABOUT THE HYPTO KRYPTO SOFTBOARD
Haydenshapes describe it as modelled after the iconic Hypto Krypto, built with a full grip textured deck and rails shaped from the original, and suited to any caliber of surfer from everyday to elite. The original Hypto Krypto is one of the best selling surfboard models of the modern era, so the shape it is copying is a known quantity.
Construction is a 3mm PE closed cell cushioned foam deck with textured traction, a thermoformed ASA bottom skin that resists UV and heat, an EPS core with two layers of glass on the deck and a single layer on the bottom, and a carbon T-stringer through the middle for strength.
Hayden Cox started shaping at fifteen in Mona Vale, Australia, and has been building boards under his own name since 1996.
HOW IT COMPARES
Against a standard learner foamie like the Gnaraloo Beach Cruiser, this is a completely different board. The Beach Cruiser carries 70 to 105 litres and is built to catch waves for you. This carries 34 to 53 and expects you to catch them yourself.
Against the original fibreglass Hypto Krypto, you give up a little liveliness and gain a board you can lend out, travel with, and surf in a crowd without worrying.
IMPORTANT NOTES
- Fins are not included. It takes a Futures 3 setup and you will need to buy a set. Ask us and we will match fins to your weight and the board size.
- Not a beginner board. The volumes are performance volumes. If you are learning, this will frustrate you and we will happily point you at something better.
- No wax needed, but it is not a tail pad. The textured deck gives grip straight off the rack. Some riders still add a pad for the back foot.
- You will need a leash. No leash included and no board bag.
- Heat is the enemy. The ASA skin is heat resistant, not heatproof. Do not leave it on hot sand or in a closed car all day.
