SALT GYPSY DUSTY EPOXY SOFT LONGBOARD, CYNTHIA ROWLEY WHITE

INCLUDES 9.5" SINGLE FIN AND COTTON DUST JACKET. EXCLUDES LEASH AND BOARD BAG.

We recommend surfboard wax with all surfboards, including soft tops. A soft deck is not a grippy deck once it is wet. Wax it lightly before each session.

A proper longboard changes what a small, gutless day is worth. Where a shortboard sits waiting, a 9'0" is already trimming. The Dusty is that board, built soft so you can learn on it without fear.

5 REASONS WHY YOU NEED THIS BOARD

  • 9'0" and 69 litres of genuine longboard glide, so knee-high summer rollers become rideable rather than frustrating.
  • Nose concave into rolled vee with 60/40 rails, which is classic longboard design rather than a foamie pretending to be one.
  • Epoxy Soft multi-layer build: PE deck skin, thin wood veneer, epoxy and fibreglass wrapped EPS core with stringer, HD PE bottom skin. Hard board performance with soft top safety.
  • Stable enough for a learner to stand on and responsive enough for an experienced surfer to style out a small day.
  • A 9.5 inch single fin is included, so it rides properly out of the box with nothing else to buy but a leash.

SIZES AND VOLUMES

  • 9'0" x 22 1/2" x 3", 69 litres (GSI rated rider 70kg +)

Would you like a free 15 minute consultation to help you choose the right board length and volume? Book a call with Tom "TK" Kibblewhite. Tom has represented New Zealand and won numerous national and local titles in both longboarding and shortboarding. This kind of feedback will be priceless in helping you select the right product.

You can see more of Tom's surfing and coaching on Instagram: @t.kibblewhite and @cleanlinessurfcoaching

HOW TO WORK OUT THE VOLUME YOU NEED

Go on volume against body weight, not height. Volume is what catches waves.

At a small, sheltered beach in waves under about 80cm, the starting point for a beginner is around 1 litre of volume per kilo of body weight. Push that up to around 1.5 litres per kilo if you are a complete beginner, not especially sporty, or still working on paddle fitness.

GSI recommend 70kg and up for the 9'0", and at 69 litres that is about 1 litre per kilo, their usual intermediate figure.

A longboard is more forgiving on volume than a shorter board because the length does so much of the work, so this is a fairer rating than most. That said, a complete beginner over about 85kg will still be better served by a Beach Cruiser 9'0", which carries 105 litres.

Treat that as a starting point. Fitness, coordination and how often you actually get in the water all change the answer, and so does where you surf. Wave size, shape and power make a real difference to the board someone needs, and a board that is perfect at a gutless summer beach break can be the wrong board somewhere with more push.

We are always happy to talk it through and confirm the size before you buy. Tell us your height, weight, how much surfing you have done and where you surf, and we will tell you which one we would put you on.

WHO IT'S BEST FOR

  • Small, soft days where a shortboard is useless
  • Surfers wanting to learn to trim and walk the board
  • Beginners through to advanced, which is genuinely true of this shape
  • Anyone after one board for Orewa on an average day

WHY A LONGBOARD IN NEW ZEALAND

Most New Zealand beach breaks are small and soft more often than they are good. A longboard turns the average day into a session instead of a wait.

The length catches waves early, the glide carries you through flat sections, and the stability gives you somewhere to stand and move. It is the most used board in a lot of quivers for exactly that reason.

ABOUT THE SALT GYPSY DUSTY

Epoxy Soft construction, which GSI build as a multi-layer board: a low-density PE deck skin with two 6oz layers, an EPS core wrapped in epoxy and fibreglass with a plywood stringer and a thin wood veneer, and a single 6oz layer with a high-density PE skin on the bottom.

Contours are nose concave into rolled vee with 60/40 rails, which is what gives it both noseride stability and the ability to turn off the tail. GSI rate it beginner through advanced in 0 to 4ft.

HOW IT COMPARES

Against the Salt Gypsy Mid Tide, the Dusty is longer, glidier and better on the smallest days, while the Mid Tide turns more easily and is simpler to handle.

Against a Beach Cruiser 9'0", the Dusty is a real longboard shape with a proper single fin, where the Beach Cruiser is a learner board at the same length with far more volume.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • It is 9 foot. Check your car and your storage before you buy. Length is the point, but it is also the hassle.
  • Single fin. It rides as a single, which is a different feel from a thruster. If you have only ever surfed thrusters, expect it to drive rather than pivot.
  • You will need a leash. A longboard leash, not a shortboard one. Ask us.
  • The dust jacket is not a travel bag. It is a cotton cover for storage and dings in the car, not padded freight protection.

These boards are built in GSI's Epoxy Soft construction. Here is GSI explaining what that actually means and why it rides differently to a standard foamie.

WHY BUY FROM UNDERGROUND

We have been selling surfboards and soft tops from Orewa Beach, Auckland since 1997. Nearly 30 years on the same stretch of coast, and most of us learnt to surf on it.

This is a new arrival, so it has no product reviews of its own yet. What we can show you is what customers say about getting the right gear out of us. We hold 4.9 stars from 247 Google reviews.

"prompt delivery - great packaging - cheap shipping - the board is fantastic" Martin Williams, Google review

"gone above and beyond with awesome service, advice and professionalism" Kurt Roll, Google review

We stock the Softech range because it holds up in a New Zealand summer, and we will tell you honestly if a different board suits you better. Come and see them at 306 Hibiscus Coast Highway, Orewa.
