SOFTECH COASTER MASON HO SOFT TOP SURFBOARD, GREY
INCLUDES FINS. EXCLUDES LEASH AND BOARD BAG.
We recommend surfboard wax with all surfboards, including soft tops. A soft deck is not a grippy deck once it is wet. Wax it lightly before each session.
Nearly everyone who learns to surf learns on the wrong board. They borrow something too small because it looks like a real surfboard, spend three sessions not catching anything, and decide surfing is harder than it looks. It is not. The board was wrong.
The Softech Coaster is Softech's most popular model and the one they build for exactly this problem.
5 REASONS WHY YOU NEED THIS BOARD
- Volume from 57 to 88 litres across the range, which is genuinely enough float for an adult to catch waves from the first session rather than the fifth.
- A wide mid section and rolled vee bottom give you a stable platform to pop up on, so you are learning to surf instead of learning to balance.
- Soft deck and soft rails mean the board does not punish you when you fall, and in your first season you will fall a lot.
- FCS II fins are included and swap without screws or tools, so you can soften the board off or firm it up as you improve instead of buying another one.
- At 8'0" it carries 88 litres, enough that a heavier rider or a complete beginner is properly catered for rather than being sold something too small.
SIZES AND VOLUMES
- 6'0" x 21 3/4" x 3 7/16", 57 litres
- 6'6" x 22" x 3 7/16", 63 litres
- 7'0" x 22 1/4" x 3 7/16", 70 litres
- 7'6" x 22 1/2" x 3 7/16", 77 litres
- 8'0" x 22 3/4" x 3 5/8", 88 litres

HOW TO WORK OUT THE SIZE YOU NEED
Go on volume against body weight, not height. Volume is what catches waves.
At a small, sheltered beach in waves under about 80cm, the starting point for a beginner is around 1 litre of volume per kilo of body weight. Push that up to around 1.5 litres per kilo if you are a complete beginner, not especially sporty, or still working on paddle fitness.
Pick on your own weight. At 1 litre per kilo the 6'0" suits a rider around 57kg and the 8'0" suits around 88kg. If you are a complete beginner, work at 1.5 litres per kilo instead, which puts the 8'0" at about 59kg. If you are between two sizes, go up. Nobody ever regretted extra float while learning.
Treat that as a starting point. Fitness, coordination and how often you actually get in the water all change the answer, and so does where you surf. Wave size, shape and power make a real difference to the board someone needs, and a board that is perfect at a gutless summer beach break can be the wrong board somewhere with more push.
We are always happy to talk it through and confirm the size before you buy. Tell us your height, weight, how much surfing you have done and where you surf, and we will tell you which one we would put you on.
WHO IT'S BEST FOR
- Adult beginners learning to catch and ride unbroken waves
- Anyone who has had a few lessons and wants their own board
- Experienced surfers who want a fun board for small, soft days
- Families sharing one board across different sizes and abilities
- Surf schools and baches that need something that survives being lent out

WHY LEARN ON A SOFT TOP SURFBOARD
A soft top, or foamie as most people round here call it, is not a cheap version of a real surfboard. It is a different tool for a different job.
Float is what catches waves. A beginner on a low volume board spends the session paddling and missing, and wave count is the only thing that actually builds skill. More waves caught means faster progression, every time.
The soft deck matters just as much. A hard fibreglass board hurts when it hits you, and a beginner gets hit a lot. People who get hurt early often do not come back.
ABOUT THE COASTER MASON HO SOFT TOP SURFBOARD
Softech call the Coaster their most popular and most versatile model, and that is a fair read of what it does. The generous outline and the rolled vee bottom through the belly make it forgiving underfoot, while the long parallel rails give you somewhere stable to stand. It also has an easy carry handle moulded in, which sounds small until you are walking a 7ft board down a windy beach.
The EPS core keeps it light for its size, and the FCS II fin system means you can change fins in seconds with no screws and no key. Start on the softer setup, firm it up as you get better.
HOW IT COMPARES
The Coaster is the learner board in the Softech range. The Goblin sits below it but is shaped for children, 20kg to 50kg, so it is not an adult option.
Above it sit The Middie and The Slayer. Both are lower volume at a similar length, which makes them better once you have the basics and worse while you are getting them. For comparison, our Slayer 7'0" carries 55 litres against this board's 70 litres at the same length. If you are still learning to stand up, the Coaster is the right call.
IMPORTANT NOTES
- It is a big board. The bigger sizes are genuinely large to carry and to car-top. Measure your roof racks and your garage before you buy an 8'0".
- You will outgrow it, and that is the point. Most people move to a shorter board inside a year or two. Soft tops hold their value and most people keep theirs as a small day board.
- You will need a leash. There is a leash plug fitted but no leash included, and no board bag. Ask us and we will match the right one.
- Look after the skin. If the outer skin gets punctured, dry the board out and seal it with clear silicone before it goes back in the water.
