Lighter handling, refined power and effortless speed for faster, more efficient riding. Proven Performance, Evolved.
The X-Wing Performance sits above the XPS as Armstrong’s next step in high-performance wing design, delivering lighter handling, refined power and effortless speed for riders pushing into faster, more efficient riding.
X-Wing Performance Overview
The Armstrong X-Wing Performance is a high-aspect performance wing designed for riders prioritising speed, efficiency, and powered riding.
Positioned above the XPS Mk II in the Armstrong range, the X-Wing delivers lighter handling, refined power delivery, and noticeably improved efficiency through the wind range.
The higher aspect airframe generates excellent forward drive and apparent wind, allowing the wing to travel upwind and downwind at higher angles while maintaining a fast, composed feel.
Compared to the XPS Mk II, the X-Wing feels lighter and more reactive in the hands, particularly through transitions and heel-side tacks.
X-Wing Performance vs XPS Mk II
X-Wing Performance
- Faster and more efficient
- Higher aspect design
- Lighter handling feel
- Better upwind and downwind angles
- More reactive and nimble
XPS Mk II
- More low-end power
- More stable in gusty conditions
- Better suited to rough water and surf.
- Smaller sizes are better for people on low-volume boards if they stink bug start in rough water.
- Easier to capture the power and suits, beginner and intermediate riders better.
- More compact handling feel
In simple terms:
- X-Wing = Speed and efficiency
- XPS Mk II = Power and stability
Key Specs
- Higher aspect performance wing - This means it will go faster and point upwind higher. The downside is the tips are longer tip to tip with the strut shorter.
- Ultra PE X-Ply airframe construction. Lightweight high-efficiency design, This is incredibly light and a huge benefit for all sizes 5m plus and low wind.
- Reduced leading edge diameter - makes it faster.
- Carbon battens to minimise canopy flutter.
- Cross Panel Sail Design (XPS layout)
- Dyna-Link carbon boom system compatible
- Built for powered riding, speed, and efficiency.
Nicks Real-World Feedback After Testing
From our own testing and rider feedback:
- Surprisingly fast and nimble feeling. When you pair this with an MA and a Performance X-Mast, everybody else looks like they are standing still on the water.
- Heel-side tacks feel incredibly fast and easy.
- Lay down, jibes a precision and text book.
- Excellent upwind and downwind efficiency.'
- Generates speed and glide effortlessly. Goes from zero to full speed very quickly.
- Particularly impressive on mid-length boards where the low end is not needed as much .
- I've used the 5.5 in 8 knots of wind and managed to get to foil in one size up. Didn't come down. They are very efficient, and you can comfortably sail at well above the wind speed using a parent wouldn't
“It’s an absolute weapon in conditions up to 20 knots. I've found it a little bit more unstable than the Mark II XPS in conditions above this and especially if the conditions are very patchy with gusts anywhere from 10 to 30 knots.”
after a session last week at Namotu lifts using this Combo, I can seriously say this was the best set up I've ever ridden
- X-Form 75ML Board
- X Mast 865 .5 Degree shim
- MA690 with Dart 140 Blue shim
- 4m X Wing.
The higher aspect shape rewards efficient riding and performs best in cleaner, more consistent wind conditions where the wing can generate apparent wind effectively.
Compared to the XPS Mk II, the X-Wing does not produce the same low-end grunt. Many riders may prefer to size up approximately half a size to achieve similar bottom-end power.
Best For
- Low wind conditions where you need maximum efficiency to stay on foil.
- Intermediate to advanced riders
- Mid-length board riding or boards at least 80% of your weight and volume.
- Faster freeride and freerace
- Powered riding, those who can comfortably ride at full speed on their current gear and they're looking for more.
- Riders prioritising efficiency and glide
- Consistent wind conditions
Important Notes
Don't be shy to size up one, possibly two sizes from your XPS.
The X-Wing is designed as a higher performance alternative to the XPS Mk II — not a replacement.
Its higher aspect design creates greater efficiency and speed but also produces a taller overall wing shape. In highly gusty conditions, rough water, or larger surf, some riders may still prefer the more compact and stable feel of the XPS Mk II.
If your priority is maximum low-end power and all-condition stability, the XPS Mk II may still be the better fit.
If your priority is speed, glide, and efficient powered riding, the X-Wing is a major step forward.
